Kataara Women’s Poverty Alleviation Group (KWPAG) is a Community Based Organization registered under Rubirizi Local Government Reg.No.181 with its offices in Kataara I village ½ km from Kichwamba Sub County Headquarters in Bunyaruguru County – Rubirizi District. The group started in May 2005 with only 25 registered members of whom 20 where females and 5 males.

Our Mission

Building the capacity of community members to alleviate poverty and conserve the environment for sustainable livelihood.

The organisation has since carried out a number of activities such as piggery project with funding from Community Driven Development (CCD) fund, coffee processing with the help of an in-kind donation of a pulping machine from prime West Uganda which has now been phased out.

Establishment of handcraft center for promoting community tourism, supported by world wide fund for nature (WWF Uganda). Bee keeping at the boundary of Queen Elizabeth National Park to reduce human elephant conflicts, because elephants fear bees and bees chase elephants not to destroy community crops and property.

Establishment of elephant dung paper making center for paper production to reduce extinction of elephants around Queen Elizabeth National Park and to create a relationship between the community and the conservation of elephants.

Other activities that organization members have immersed themselves into include; micro savings and credit scheme, tree nursery bed operation and advocacy on tree planting.

The organization has an Annual General Meeting as a supreme policy making body during which members of the board are elected in a democratic process of one man one vote. The board is the governing body of the organization and consists of 7 members with the chairperson, treasurer and general secretary as signatories on the organization’s account.

The major aim of Kataara Women Poverty Alleviation Group is to promote community sustainable livelihood which is achieved through community empowerment projects and environment conservation initiatives. For the past eleven years, we have carried out a number of activities ranging from setting up tree nursery beds, promotion of eco -tourism by selling handcrafts to the tourists, elephant dung papers, animal husbandry (e.g. piggery & goat raring), poultry keeping and micro saving and credit scheme for the members to alleviate poverty and improve livelihood.
